Biopolymers: a common health problem in Mexico
"Biopolymers" refers to different substances injected to add volume, mainly in the buttocks, hips, legs, breasts and face: liquid silicone, oils, methacrylate and other products not authorized for that use. They are often applied outside clinics, by people who are not doctors, and patients may not know what they were injected with.
These substances do not stay where they are injected. Over time they can migrate, harden and cause inflammation, pain, skin discoloration, lumps, infections and other complications, sometimes years later. This condition is known as iatrogenic allogenosis.
Treatment depends on the substance, the amount, the area and the condition of the skin and tissues. That is why it starts with a thorough consultation, in which I examine the affected area and, if needed, order imaging studies to locate the material.
My goal is to safely remove as much material as possible and, when feasible, rebuild the contour of the area, for example with your own fat (liposuction and fat transfer) or with buttock implants. I also treat patients with complications from buttock, breast or liposuction surgeries done elsewhere.

How do I know if I was injected with biopolymers?
If you received a filler in the buttocks, legs, breasts or face outside a clinic, or you do not know what substance it was, a consultation is advisable. The most common symptoms are lumps, hardening, pain, inflammation or skin discoloration, although they may take years to appear.
Can they be completely removed?
It depends on how much material there is and how much it has blended with the tissues. In many cases a large part can be removed, but not always all of it. I will explain what to expect in your case during the consultation.
What happens if I do not have them removed?
Some people have no symptoms for years, but the material can migrate or become inflamed at any time. A consultation lets you know its current state and make an informed decision.
Can the shape of my buttocks be restored?
In many cases, yes. Depending on the condition of the tissues, the contour can be rebuilt with your own fat or with implants, in the same surgery or in a second stage.
What is iatrogenic allogenosis?
It is the medical name for the disease caused by unauthorized filler substances, such as biopolymers, when the body reacts against them.
How much does biopolymer removal cost?
It depends on the area, the amount of material and whether reconstruction is done. That is why I do not quote a price without examining you: during your consultation I plan your treatment with you and you receive a complete quote.
