What is the ideal breast size? How to choose your implant
There is no single ideal size: the right one is the size in harmony with your body. Here is how it is chosen.
Dr. José Luis Daza · Board-certified plastic surgeon
There is no one ideal size
It is one of the most common questions in consultation. The short answer is that the ideal size is not a cup number, but the one in harmony with your proportions: your height, shoulder width, chest shape and weight.
That is why it is not a good idea to choose an implant from a photo or a friend’s advice. The same volume can look natural on one patient and exaggerated on another.
How cup size is measured
Cup size is based on the difference between the bust measurement (at its fullest point) and the underbust measurement:
- Less than 1 inch: AA cup
- About 1 inch: A cup
- About 2 inches: B cup
- About 3 inches: C cup
- About 4 inches: D cup
- More than 4 inches: DD cup or larger
Sizes vary between bra brands, so the cup is only a reference. During your consultation the doctor works with chest measurements and implant volume.
Height and build matter
As a general rule, on patients shorter than 5′3″ (1.60 m) a C or D cup often looks out of proportion, while on patients taller than 5′7″ (1.70 m) a C, or even D, cup can look balanced.
Weight matters too. For a shorter patient with some localized fat, a moderate implant combined with liposculpture can balance the whole figure.
What the surgeon considers
Besides your measurements, the consultation considers:
- Implant shape (round or anatomical) and its projection, or profile
- Placement: under the gland or under the muscle
- The incision used to place it
- The size of the pocket created for the implant
- Your chest shape and how much breast tissue you already have
- The result you want: natural, subtle or fuller
How it is chosen with you
During your consultation the doctor takes your measurements, examines your chest and shows you volume options so you can see how each would look. The decision is made together: you share the result you want and the doctor advises on what is balanced and safe for your body.
FAQ
Which cup size looks most natural?
It depends on your height and build. For many patients of average height a B or C cup looks proportionate, but the doctor confirms it with your measurements.
Can I choose the size myself?
Yes, your preference matters most. The doctor guides you so the volume you choose is balanced for your body and safe for your tissues.
Does a larger implant last less?
An implant that is too large for your tissues can increase the risk of sagging over time. That is why it is chosen based on your anatomy, not only the cup you want.
Can it be combined with another surgery?
Yes. Breast augmentation is often combined with liposculpture or a tummy tuck, as in the Mommy Makeover and Barbie packages.
