Buttock implant myths: what is true and what is not
Many false ideas surround buttock augmentation. Here is which ones are myths and what the evidence says.
Dr. José Luis Daza · Board-certified plastic surgeon
Myth 1: “Buttock implants always show”
Not necessarily. I use round, highly cohesive silicone gel implants placed in a deep submuscular plane, sized in proportion to your body. The scar is hidden in the fold between the buttocks. Well planned, the result looks natural.
Myth 2: “Implants burst on a plane”
False. Cohesive gel implants do not inflate or burst with cabin pressure changes. Many of my patients travel from other cities and countries and fly home without problems; most can fly 7 to 10 days after surgery.
Myth 3: “All the transferred fat stays”
False. Between 30% and 50% of the fat transferred to the buttocks is absorbed over time. If you have little fat available or want more projection, an implant or the hybrid technique may suit you better.
Myth 4: “Fat is always better than implants” (or the reverse)
It depends on your anatomy, how much fat you have and the volume you want. Hybrid gluteoplasty combines both: an implant for projection and fat for the curve of the hips. It is the basis of the Hourglass Plus package.
Myth 5: “Injected fillers are safe and cheap”
This is the most dangerous myth. Biopolymers, liquid silicone and oils are not authorized. Over time they migrate, harden and cause inflammation, pain and deformity, sometimes years later. See biopolymer removal.
What really matters
More than the technique, your safety depends on who operates and where. I operate in certified hospitals with the highest safety standards. See your options in buttock augmentation.
